Designer R. Norman Shaw described the architecture of the Flora Fountain in Mumbai as a mixture of Neo-Gothic and Indo-Saracenic styles.
The fountain is carved from stone imported from Portland and covered with a coat of white oil paint. Even the corners are decorated with statues thatdiffer from each other. At the foot of the fountain, near the body of water, you can see four fish and twenty lion heads.Engineer James Forsythe was commissioned to design this beautiful fountain.
A magnificent 7-foot statue of the Roman goddess Flora adorns the top of the fountain, enhancing its beauty.
History of Flora Fountain
in Mumbai By 1860 Mumbai (then Bombay) was a walled city with three gates: Apollo Gate, Church Gate and Bazaar Gate.
Then, by order of Sir Bartle Frere, the governor of Bombay, the walls aredemolished to enlarge the city. And on the site of the church gate stands the Flora Fountain, built in 1864. In the Flora Fountain was dedicated to Bartle Frere and was given the name Frere Fountain.But before the inauguration, it was replaced by the Flora Fountain.
The area has become popular as a flora fountain area. In 1960, another stone building with torch-carrying patriots was erected near the well to commemorate the deaths of 105 people who lost their lives fighting for the separate state of Maharashtra that still exists today. Inhonor of the dead, the area was renamed Hutatma Chowk (Martyr’s Square).
